Wilmington Riverfront Festival … Blues…Blues…Bluezzz…all the way

Submitted by on August 20, 2011 – 3:16 pm2 Comments

Tubman-Garrett Park in Wilmington was the place to be when they had their Blues Festival at the Riverfront.

The three-day festival hosted dozens of rock ‘n roll and blues artists from around the region. It was a different kind of break for me, as I went to attend this years festival, spending my day enjoying live music and entertainment, great food and the fun atmosphere created with fellow blues enthusiasts!

What I was eagerly looking for, was the concert of James Cotton on his legendry Harp. He just did not disappoint me at all. He still has it in him to sway the crowd, get them on their feat, and yearn for more.

But, I also had some really nice surprises. One certainly, which became the highlight of my trip was the encounter with Travis Haddix. Pleasant to talk too for sure, but his concert literally blew me off. He along with his band, simply rocked. I have snippets of his performance on my camera, will try and upload that, but he was simply incredible with his guitar and vocals.

Another nice surprise concert for me was that of April, Mae & the June bugs. It was a lively set of 3 and brought out a lot of energy in their chosen numbers.

I also loved Vasti Johnson, again he was a delight to watch in his guitar, and had an eye catching stage presence.

Super Chikan was kind of entertaining and funny too…. with his often repeated tag line ” somebody shoot that thing” ….

There were other center stage and bandwagaon stage artists, who entertained us. I enjoyed many of them that included,

E.C. Scott, Porkroll Project, Joe Kubek & Bnois King, Joanne Shaw Taylor and not to forget Chicago Blues Reuniion which was very good too..

Loved the atmosphere, the food choices and the beer with the weather being very ideal and friendly till almost the close of saturday, after which it started raining. I had also stayed at the Doubletree hotel, just a few blocks away, which was very convinient for me to hop in and out easily.

I picked up a few CD’s, had it autographed by both my favorites – James Cotton and Travis Moonchild Haddix.

Looks like it may end up in my calender the next year too.
