The young singer Abhishek Raghuram performed at the evening slot this year at the prestigious Music Academy during the Chennai Music Festival also called Margazhi music season
Its rare to see such fast promotions in the otherwise orthodox music academy, where they are very strict in recognizing talent and slotting them.

So the question that was discussed in the corridors and canteen areas of the academy was quite interesting. Is the promotion a recognition of his talent or the crowd pulling ability of the artist?

There is no doubt that Abhishek is very talented and is a delight to listen. But, is he experienced enough to be slotted for the prime was the question. A regular veteran Uma who attends concerts regularly for the past decade commented ‘ Abhishek is certainly a very talented singer and he is certainly a crowd puller, but he still lacks experience and imagination that senior artists have’.

She says ‘attend two of his concerts in succession and you will know what I mean’, nevertheless she admits, she loves to listen to him and certainly has great talent.

This year attended his concert at the Music Academy, it was a packed house, and he thrilled the audience. In fact he sang to a standing ovation.

The question for Music Academy, I guess, is to maintain a delicate balance between the rigid standards and the need to pull house full crowds, as with so many competing sabhas, it surely needs to maintain its status as the King of Sabhas.
